Context For Creation
I have a compulsion to write lovely melodies. I would like to be able to write the melody that everyone has on their lips - a lovely melody though, not pop or bold or confronting. This work is part of that compulsion in some ways. In response to a question from Peter Francis, a colleague, where he pressed me on "Why aren't there more slow pieces in three four time?" I began composing the piece, in response to his jibe, the next morning. He has a point and I was seeking to not only write a new, 'lovely' melody but also create something which would help young, fledgling musicians find a musical voice. See the program note for more details of the context. It must be said that my compulsion to write lovely melodies is not a reflection on my capacity to do so. That is for others to decide.

Reflections
The works simplicity of form and melodic structure is in contrast to the challenges it presents to the young musician tonally and technically. I am very pleased to have the work chosen as an example of fine repertoire for young musicians in the GIA publication noted above. It is also pleasing to know how many conductors program the work for its melodic appeal. My response to the band students from the USA can be found here Hultgren to Barber's students.
